Hi everybody, today we are going to talk about the famous Russian alcoholic drink vodka. All foreigners know only one word – ‘vodka’ but in Russian there are dozens of names for it! Among those there are two words derived from
It’s formed with an endearment suffix and you say it like this only when you really like to drink it and also have nothing against those who drink it. You can also hear «водочка» mostly in shops or restaurants, when Russians order or buy this drink. When they say «водочка» to a waiter or a shop assistant, they sound soft and not like hopeless drunks.

Russian word for ‘vodka’: even Russians can forget the Russian word for ‘vodka’. After drinking some 🙂
Another Russian word for vodka («водка») is «водяра». It sounds rude and it shows that you a) don’t like drinking it or don’t like people drinking it in general; b) you just think that this particular bottle is of a bad quality. If you use the word «водяра» in the presence of people who like this drink, they would definitely correct you: ‘It’s not «водяра», it’s «водочка» («Не водяра, а водочка»).
And last but not the least. It’s an out-of-date belief that Russians drink only vodka. In Russia we drink only mojito.
