Hello, guys! Today I’m going to tell you about a Russian word for friend. More, two Russian words for ‘friend’! You can use one of them any time, but another… I recommend you to use it only with people you know really well. Otherwise you might have some problems. And they are not just communicational ones. There are many ways to address a friend in the Russian language.

As you already know, the most common Russian word for friend is ‘друг’. This word is very useful: you can say ‘друг’ to any person you like. The feminine form of this noun is ‘подруга’. But it isn’t customary in Russia to address a woman like that. Check out How to address a woman in Russia.

I don’t think the guy on the left knows the Russian word for friend Koresh. I think he knows that all people can be friends no matter what you call them (unless you call them jerks, ha ha)

By the way, you can often hear this Russian word for friend in the street markets: «Привет, друг!» Of course it doesn’t mean that all the vendors are your friends. They are calling you ‘друг’ just to make you smile and buy something from them. Should you smile? Yes. Should you buy? Only if you want.

Another common Russian word for friend is ‘кореш’. But you should use it very carefully. Here are some rules when to use this word:

1. Never say it to people you don’t know very well;
2. Never say it to women (this noun doesn’t even have a feminine form);
3. Never say it… Just never say it!

But why? – you may ask me. I think it’s because this Russian word for friend is extremely informal and only three types of people in Russia use and overuse it among themselves:

1. Teenagers;
2. Drunk people;
3. Drunk teenagers.

So if you are to drink some vodka with Russian teenagers, you can approach to them like this just for fun. But I wish you never have to do that. 🙂
